  Dolphins in UK waters

     dolphins

Dolphins come from a group of animals collectively known as Cetaceans.

More than ten different species of cetacean can be seen from around the UK coastline. Around the coasts of Scotland bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoise are regularly spotted. The highland areas, the entire coast of Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen, and the Moray Firth coast are among the key areas.

Huge humpback and fin whales, minke whales up to 10m long, pilot whales, killer whales, common dolphins and Atlantic white-sided dolphins, tend to prefer deeper waters but land based sightings do occur. The commonest cetacean in British waters is the harbour porpoise. They are often seen in small family groups. You may also see , long-finned pilot whale, Atlantic white-sided dolphin, Rissos Dolphin. Orca are rarer, white-beaked dolphin, common dolphin and if you are very lucky, northern bottlenose whale. In fact, the first beaked whale ever described by science was a stranded Sowerby's beaked whale, which turned up on the southern shore of the Moray Firth. The Western coast of Scotland, the Western Isles and Western Welsh coast also offer excellent cetacean watching opportunities.

Key featured dolphins of UK coastline are visible in these two areas and it is here we will focus initially.

Mother Nature needs our help.

An encounter with a wild dolphin or a pod of wild dolphins can be

an unforgettable experience whether viewed from land or from a boat .

Dolphins have for a long time, been called 'mans cousins of the sea' mainly because of their intelligent behaviour and brain size.
